Classic Greece

The classic period of Greek history dates approximately 500 to. C, when the Greeks began to enter the conflict with the kingdom of Persia to the east, and the death of the Macedonian king and the conqueror Alejandro Magno in 323 aC. In 510 aC a man known as Cleisthenes, who was an aristocrat in Athens, invented another new type of government, the democracy. Cleisthenes, like other aristocrats, darlings to obtain more supremacy, for this reason he decided to give moreover authority to the poor people. He organized a new way of doing political decisions.

Every Athenian man would have a vote, and they would find all and would vote on that to do. They called the Assembly to the big meeting. But all the men could not be every day; they had to work. This way there was also a smaller council of 500 men, who were chosen according to a lottery, and changed every year. Cleisthenes and other aristocrats would be out of the supremacy, but he arranged the voting so that its family, the Alcmaeonids, would have more votes than someone more.

In 490 aC the Persians faced Athens. Each one was very afraid, because the Persians were big warriors. Some persons thought that Athens should return to the old government system, the oligarchy, in case of the democracy enough good did not work. They thought that this would take too much a lot of time to take decisions in a democracy. But they did not return. All the men in Athens went outside to find the Persians in the Marathon. They thought that they would lose. But the fought Athenians of the new way, with the shields wall, and the Persians were still fleeing. So that the Athenians will win.

In 480 aC the Persians, faced its king Jerjes again. This time most of the cities in Greece collaborated and formed one league to fight to the Persians. They lost its first battle, in Thermopylae, but they won after this, in Salami and again in Plataea. Again the Persians were conquered.

The Athenians induced to other Greek cities in which they had to maintain the Greek strong marina together in case of the Persians returned again. At first each one thought that this was a good idea, except the Spartans, who were pushed back. Then the Athenians dijerón for other cities, ”ships and men do not bother in to send for the marina; it is too difficult. Only the money will be sent to Athens, and they will construct ships and will protect him against the Persians.” Then many cities it was what they did.

But the Persians did not return. After a little bit, some cities said, ”we do not want to send any more the money to Athens. We do not think that the Persians are going to return more.” But the Athenians usarón its big marina to do other cities and to keep on sending the money. When useless Miletus, the Athenians took its city and destroyed it. The Athenians also gastarón a little the money on your own city. No Atenienese had to pay any more taxes.

They used the money of other cities to construct big temples as the Parthenon. Other cities in Greece were angry. They asked the Spartans for help to stop the Athenians. Some cities it puts itself of the side of Athens, others with Sparta. There was a big war, of 431 aC to 404 aC (almost thirty years). They call to this the War peloponense. But finally, with the help of the Persians, the Spartans won and the Athens lost. At this hour, the whole Greece had been worn out, and the Classic period was finished.
